What is Apprenticeship?
Apprenticeship is an agreement between an individual who wants to learn a skill and an employer who needs a skilled worker. It is a combination of in-school training and on-the-job experience. An apprentice must be employed in the trade. An apprenticeship usually lasts 4 years.
As an apprentice, about 90% of your time is spent learning practical skills on the job, while supervised by a qualified journeyperson. The rest is spent learning theoretical and technical aspects of your trade. Approximately once a year the student spends 6 weeks at Okanagan College, KLO campus.
Over time, the apprenticeship system of training has proven to be one of the world's most successful ways to learn.
Note:
- If you are interested in non-apprenticeship instruction, see The Fine Woodworking Program.
- If you feel an Entry Level Program would better suit you prior to an apprenticeship. See ELT Program.
